What: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Light The Night Walk is the nation's night to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer. In 2008, the Walk raised more than $39.2 million for research and patient services.
Why: To benefit LLS's efforts to cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and provide education and services for patients and their families.
How: Participants walk along two- to three- mile route in their neighborhoods, carrying lighted balloons - white for survivors, red for supporters, and gold balloons in memory of loved ones lost. Dedication banners provide an opportunity to display a name or a message, honoring or commemorating a family member or friend with cancer.
Who: The walk is open to all: it does not require a particular level of fitness. Last year, thousands of people in approximately 230 communities in the United States and Canada participated in a Light the Night Walk event.
